Cat on long term prednisolone- will she be okay?

I'm really worried and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Luna, has been on prednisolone for a couple of months now due to her chronic asthma, and I'm concerned about her long-term health. I mean, she's always been my energetic little shadow, but lately, I've noticed she's more lethargic and seems to be gaining weight. The vet assured me that this medication was necessary, but I'm starting to wonder if the side effects are too much for her. Is this weight gain normal? Should I be doing something different with her diet or exercise? I'm terrified of making the wrong choice for her. Any insight or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to make sure I'm doing the best I can for her.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about your cat. Prednisolone is a steroid commonly used to treat various conditions such as allergies, inflammation, and immune system issues in cats. While many cats do well on long-term prednisolone, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects.

Cats can experience increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, and potential weight gain. Over time, their immune system might also be somewhat suppressed, making them more susceptible to infections. In some cases, there can also be changes in behavior or gastrointestinal upset.

At home, make sure your cat has plenty of fresh water available at all times and monitor their food intake to prevent excessive weight gain. Keeping an eye on their litter box habits and appetite can provide clues to how they’re adjusting to the medication.

Look out for signs of more serious issues like persistent vomiting, diarrhea, extreme lethargy, or signs of infection such as sneezing, coughing, or discharge from the nose or eyes. These symptoms may require prompt medical attention.

It would be a good idea to have regular check-ups with your veterinarian to monitor her overall health and adjust her treatment plan as necessary. If you'd like, I can help arrange a video consult through Dial A Vet to discuss your cat's health in more detail and address any concerns you may have.
