Question:

Cat on "lifetime" urinary food prescription, but getting refills is becoming tedious

I could really use some advice. My cat, Luna, has been on a "lifetime" urinary food prescription for about a year now due to her recurring urinary issues. It's been a miracle for her health, so I'm really grateful, but getting refills has become such a hassle. The vet's office isn’t close, and they require an appointment every time I need a refill, which feels excessive, not to mention costly. I'm starting to feel stressed every time I see her food running low. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of situation? I'm wondering if there’s a more convenient way to handle this, like online options or switching vets, without compromising Luna's health. Honestly, any advice or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:

Hello! I completely understand how managing a prescription diet for your cat can become a bit of a hassle. This special urinary food helps prevent urinary tract issues, which can be quite common and uncomfortable for cats.

The reason your cat is on this prescription diet is likely due to a history or risk of urinary crystals or stones, which can lead to blockages or infections. Cats with these conditions often require specific nutrients to keep their urinary system healthy and prevent recurrence.

While the prescription diet is important, keeping your cat well-hydrated is also key. Encourage water intake by offering fresh water daily and consider adding a pet fountain, as some cats prefer running water. You might also discuss with your vet the option of mixing some water with their wet food to boost hydration.

However, it’s vital to monitor your cat for signs of urinary troubles. Watch for straining to urinate, blood in the urine, frequent attempts to urinate with little output, or any signs of distress. These symptoms can indicate a serious issue requiring immediate veterinary attention.

If the process of refilling the prescription is consistently troublesome, it might be worth discussing with your veterinarian whether there are any more convenient options available.

To explore this further and ensure your kitty stays healthy and comfortable, consider booking a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet. We’re here to help you with any questions or concerns you may have.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
