I’m really hoping to get some advice because I’m at my wit's end here. I recently switched my cat, Whiskers, to Hills c/d urinary food because our vet recommended it for her urinary issues. The good news is that her symptoms have improved, but ever since the switch, she’s completely stopped using her litter box—like, she won't go near it at all. I’ve tried cleaning it more often, changing the litter brand, and even moved it to a different room, but nothing seems to work. She’s always been good about using it before the food change. I’m stressed because I don't want her to be uncomfortable or unhappy, and I also don’t know how to handle the mess. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any tips or suggestions would be so appreciated!
Hello there!
I understand it can be concerning when your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, especially after making a diet change. A few possibilities might explain this behavior.
First, let's consider the litter box itself. Cats can be sensitive to the cleanliness of their boxes, so ensure it’s clean and located in a quiet, accessible spot. The change in diet might have altered your cat's stool consistency or frequency, prompting a different bathroom routine.
There’s also a chance your cat is associating the litter box with discomfort if it began experiencing any urinary discomfort after the food switch. While Hills c/d is designed to support urinary health, it’s important to note that transitions to a new diet should be gradual. If not done slowly, it can sometimes lead to digestive upset.
Observe your cat for signs like straining, frequent attempts to urinate, or licking around the urinary opening. These could indicate a urinary issue requiring immediate attention.
At home, ensure your cat is drinking plenty of fresh water and try using a Feliway diffuser to reduce stress, which can sometimes contribute to litter box issues.
If the problem persists or you've noticed any worrying signs, it’s best to chat with a professional. Book a video consult with us on Dial A Vet, and we can delve deeper into your cat’s situation.
