Cat not eating with URI - do we try syringe feeding?

Help, I’m feeling really worried about my cat, Luna. She’s been battling this upper respiratory infection for a few days, and I’m scared because she’s stopped eating. I’ve done a bit of research and found that syringe feeding could be an option, but I’ve never done it before and I’m nervous about doing something wrong. She’s usually a little piglet at mealtime, but now she just sniffs her food and walks away. The vet suggested giving her some time to recover, but I’m not seeing any improvement. Has anyone been in this situation before? I’m desperate to make sure Luna gets the nutrition she needs but I don’t want to stress her out more than she already is. Any advice or tips on how to safely syringe feed or maybe alternative solutions would really be appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It sounds like your kitty is under the weather with an upper respiratory infection (URI), which can make eating a bit challenging. Cats with URI often have reduced appetite because their sense of smell is affected, and they might feel generally unwell.

Syringe feeding can be a short-term solution to ensure your cat gets some nutrition. However, it’s important to be gentle and patient when doing so. Use a pureed or watered-down version of her favorite wet food. Offer small amounts to avoid overwhelming her. While some cats may tolerate it, others might become stressed, so observe her response carefully.

At-home tricks to entice her to eat include warming up her food slightly to enhance the aroma or offering strong-smelling options like small amounts of tuna or chicken. Make sure she has access to fresh water, as hydration is crucial.

Keep an eye out for signs that could signal worsening health, such as labored breathing, persistent cough, lethargy, or discharge from the eyes or nose. If she experiences these, or if she refuses to eat for more than 24 hours, it’s important to get professional advice.
