Cat not able to move

I'm really worried about my cat, Whiskers. Yesterday, he was perfectly fine, roaming around the house like he always does. But today, he seems unable to move properly. He’s just lying in his favorite spot on the couch, and when he tries to stand, he stumbles and falls back down. I've tried calling his name, hoping he would come to me like he usually does, but he just looks at me with those sad eyes. I thought at first it might be something minor, maybe a muscle strain, but I just don’t know. He’s eating a little and drinking when I bring his bowl to him, but I can tell he's not himself. I’m reaching out because I’m scared it could be something serious. Any advice or similar experiences out there? I’m taking him to the vet first thing in the morning, but the wait is killing me. Thank you in advance for any help.

Answer

Thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear your cat is having this issue. When a cat can't move, it can be very concerning. Let's talk about some possible causes and what you can do at home.

First, it's important to consider any recent trauma or injury. Cats can sometimes hurt themselves during a fall or an accident. If your cat has been injured, keeping them as still and comfortable as possible until you can get advice from a vet is best.

Another possibility is a neurological issue, such as paralysis from a condition like a slipped disc or a blood clot, which is called a saddle thrombus. These conditions can cause sudden immobility and warrant immediate veterinary attention.

Cats can also be affected by toxins, which might cause weakness or the inability to move. If you suspect poisoning, look for signs like drooling, vomiting, or tremors.

While caring for your cat at home, keep them in a quiet, safe space away from other pets or dangers. Ensure they stay hydrated and warm.

Watch for signs like labored breathing, severe pain, or changes in consciousness, as these are emergencies.

I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can discuss your cat’s symptoms in more detail and plan the best course of action together.
