Cat licked some antibiotic ointment. Ingredients posted. No vet open, should I be concerned?

I don’t know what’s going on, but I really need some advice. It’s late in the evening, and I just caught my cat, Whiskers, licking some antibiotic ointment I left on the bathroom counter—totally my fault for leaving it there. I think it’s only been a few minutes since he got into it, but I’m pretty worried because all the vets around here are closed right now. He seems fine, just his usual curious self, but I’m freaking out a little inside about what might happen. Does anyone know if there’s something specific I should look out for, or is it a watch-and-wait kind of thing? I’ve got the ointment tube here with all the ingredients listed, just in case that helps. Any insight would be super appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out. It's definitely concerning when our curious feline friends get into something they shouldn't! If your cat licked a small amount of non-prescription antibiotic ointment, like those containing bacitracin, neomycin, or polymyxin B, there’s generally no need to panic. These ingredients are not highly toxic in small doses. However, they can cause mild gastrointestinal upset, leading to symptoms like drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea.

At home, you can help by offering your cat plenty of fresh water to drink and monitoring them closely for any changes in behavior or signs of discomfort. Encourage your cat to rest and avoid activities that might upset their stomach further.

Keep an eye out for signs of a more serious reaction, such as excessive vomiting, diarrhea that doesn’t resolve, lethargy, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's essential to seek veterinary care right away.

To ensure your peace of mind and get tailored advice for your situation, it would be a good idea to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals, who can further assess your cat's condition and guide you on the best course of action.
