I'm really hoping to get some advice or insights here. Last month, my cat, Milo, had to be hospitalized for a severe respiratory infection. It was terrifying to see him so weak; I didn’t know if he was going to pull through. Thankfully, the vet managed to stabilize him and after a week, he was able to come back home. I thought everything would go back to normal, but ever since the hospitalization, Milo just isn't the same. He used to be this energetic little furball, always playing and demanding attention. Now, he seems so distant and barely responds when I call his name. He’s eating and drinking okay, but it’s like he lost his spark. It breaks my heart to see him like this. Has anyone else experienced this with their cat? How long did it take for them to feel like themselves again? I’d appreciate any advice you could share because I really miss my happy Milo.
Hello there,
I'm really sorry to hear that your cat isn't acting like their usual self after their hospital stay. It's understandable to feel concerned. Sometimes, cats may seem different after being in an unfamiliar, stressful environment like a hospital. They might be more withdrawn, less active, or even have changes in their eating and drinking habits.
Potential reasons for these changes can include stress or anxiety from the hospital experience, lingering discomfort or pain, or effects from medications or treatments they received. Cats are particularly sensitive to stress, and it might take some time for them to settle back into their normal routine.
At home, make sure your cat has a quiet, comfortable space where they can relax and feel safe. Keep their routine as consistent as possible—feeding them at the usual times and allowing them the space they need to adjust. You can also gently encourage their usual activities with toys or treats if they're responsive.
Watch closely for signs that might indicate your cat needs further veterinary care, such as not eating or drinking for more than a day, vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive lethargy. Any of these could warrant prompt attention.
If you continue to have concerns or if your cat’s behavior doesn’t improve, I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet. We can help determine if any follow-up care might be needed. I hope your cat feels better soon!
