Question:

Cat has watery eyes and excessive eye discharge

I'm really concerned about my cat, Luna, and could use some advice. She's always been pretty healthy, but recently her eyes have been really watery, and there's a lot of discharge. It's not just in the mornings—it's like an all-day thing now. It’s gotten so bad I have to clean her eyes multiple times a day. I haven’t changed her diet or anything lately, and there haven’t been many changes around the house. She seems a bit more lethargic too, which has me worried. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat? Should I be rushing her to the vet, or is there something I can do at home to help her comfort? Any advice would be really appreciated—I’m just hoping this is nothing too serious. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that your kitty is dealing with watery eyes and excessive discharge; let's see how I can help.

Cats can have watery eyes and discharge for several reasons, including allergies, infections, or even irritants like dust or pollen. Sometimes, it could be due to a more structural issue like blocked tear ducts or eyelid problems.

At home, try wiping your cat's eyes gently with a soft, damp cloth. Use a separate part of the cloth for each eye to avoid spreading any potential infection. Ensure your cat's environment is free from tobacco smoke and strong odors, as these can exacerbate eye irritation.

Keep an eye out for signs like redness, swelling, persistent squinting, or if your cat seems to be in discomfort. These could indicate a more serious problem, such as an infection or inflammation, which might require professional attention.

If the symptoms persist beyond a day or two or get worse, it’s best to consult with a vet to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Feel free to book a video consult with Dial A Vet—we’re here to help and ensure your feline friend feels their best!

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
