Cat has swollen paw pads with slightly flaky skin. Does anyone know what this might be?

I’m really worried about my cat, Bella. Over the last few days, I noticed her paw pads are swollen, and the skin is starting to look a bit flaky. She's been walking with a slight limp and seems to be licking her paws more than usual. I initially thought she might have stepped on something outside, but it doesn’t seem to be improving at all. We haven’t changed her food or anything in her environment recently, so I’m at a loss. I’m hoping someone might have experienced something similar with their furry friends. Could this be an allergy, an infection, or something else? I’m planning on taking her to the vet soon, but I’d really appreciate any advice in the meantime. Thanks so much!

Answer

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear about your kitty's swollen paw pads. Let's see if we can figure this out together. Swollen paw pads can be caused by a few different things. It might be an allergic reaction, perhaps to something they've stepped on or been in contact with, like a new floor cleaner. Another possibility is a mild infection, which can cause swelling and flakiness. Sometimes, cats also develop something called plasma cell pododermatitis, which can cause the symptoms you’re seeing.

For home care, consider gently cleaning their paws with warm water to remove any possible irritants, and make sure their litter box and surroundings are clean to prevent infection. Be cautious and avoid using human skin care products, as they can be harmful to cats.

Watch for signs like increased swelling, redness, limping, excessive licking, or if your cat seems to be in pain. These could indicate a more serious issue that needs immediate attention.

If the symptoms persist or worsen, it might be best to consult a vet to ensure your furry friend gets the care they need. I recommend booking a video consult with a Dial A Vet professional who can take a closer look and provide tailored advice. Take care!
