Hello! I’m sorry to hear about your cat’s ingrown nail. It’s fairly common and can certainly be uncomfortable for your furry friend. An ingrown nail in cats happens when the nail grows into the soft tissue of the paw pad, leading to pain and sometimes infection.
At home, you can try gently trimming the tip of the nail if it’s visible and not too embedded. Be cautious not to cut too close to the skin or cause bleeding. To ease any discomfort, you might gently clean the area with a mild saline solution; this can help prevent infection.
Keep an eye out for signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, or oozing of pus. If your cat is constantly licking the paw or limping, it’s a sign the issue could be more serious. In these cases, or if the nail is deeply embedded, it’s important to see a vet. If you notice any of these signs or if the condition worsens, try to consult a vet sooner.
Since waiting can sometimes make things worse, consider booking a video consult with us here at Dial A Vet. We can guide you through managing the situation and discuss the best next steps to ensure your cat feels better soon.
Cat has ingrown nail and vet's don't have availability for two weeks
I’m really stressed and need some advice. My sweet cat, Mr. Whiskers, has an ingrown nail, and it looks like it’s really bothering him. He keeps licking it and limping around, and I can tell it's painful for him. I’ve called every vet in town, but the soonest they can see him is two weeks from now! I’m worried it might get worse if I wait that long. I don’t want to risk it getting infected or causing more pain. Has anyone else been through this before? What can I do at home to help him in the meantime? Any advice would be so appreciated—I’m really feeling at a loss here and just want to do right by my little guy.
