Question:

Cat has been coughing, recently coughed up tiny drops of blood.

I’m really worried and hoping someone might have some advice. My cat, Whiskers, has started coughing more frequently over the past couple of weeks. At first, I thought it was just a hairball situation, but then things took a turn. Yesterday, he coughed up what looked like tiny drops of blood, and it's got me pretty shaken up. He’s always been such a lively little guy, and seeing him uncomfortable like this is breaking my heart. I plan to get him to the vet ASAP, but with constant jam-packed schedules this week, I’m trying to gather as much information as I can beforehand. Has anyone experienced something like this before? What should I prepare myself for, and is there anything I can do to help Whiskers in the meantime? Thanks in advance for any support or advice you can offer.

Answer:

I'm sorry to hear that your cat has been coughing and even coughed up a bit of blood. It sounds like you’re understandably worried, so let’s see if we can make some sense of what's happening.

Cats can cough for several reasons, much like humans. It could be due to something simple like a hairball, but coughing up blood points to something that may need more attention. Potential causes might include respiratory infections, such as feline viral infections, or even conditions like asthma or pneumonia. If your cat spends time outdoors, parasites such as lungworms could also be a possibility.

In the short term, keep your home environment calm and free of irritants like smoke, strong perfumes, or dust, which could aggravate your cat's throat and lungs. Ensure your cat stays hydrated, as good fluid intake helps ease congestion, and consider a humidifier to moisten the air.

However, it's crucial to monitor for any signs of a serious issue. If you notice your cat having difficulty breathing, a persistent cough, lethargy, or a loss of appetite, these symptoms call for immediate veterinary attention.

I highly recommend scheduling a video consult with Dial A Vet soon, so we can take a closer look and determine the best course of action for your furry friend.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
