Question:

Cat harness compatible with e-tube?

I’ve hit a bit of a snag and could really use some advice from fellow cat parents. My fluffball Milo is an absolute escape artist, and after a few too many Houdini acts on our walks, I’m determined to find a cat harness that can securely accommodate his e-tube. He’s recovering from surgery, so ensuring that nothing tugs or pinches the tube is crucial. I’ve tried a couple of harnesses, but they didn’t sit quite right, putting pressure near where his tube is placed. We’ve got a follow-up vet appointment soon, but in the meantime, I’m desperate to find a solution that lets us enjoy our little outdoor adventures without compromising his comfort or safety. Any recommendations or tips would be hugely appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you're caring for a special kitty with an e-tube, and it's wonderful that you're thinking about their comfort and safety. Cats with e-tubes can generally wear a harness, but it’s very important to ensure that the harness doesn’t interfere with the tube or cause any discomfort.

When choosing a harness, look for one that's adjustable and lightweight to avoid putting pressure on the feeding tube area. A vest-style harness is often a good choice, as it can distribute any pressure more evenly and helps avoid direct contact around the neck or tube area.

At home, you can make sure the tube is secure and covered; using medical tape and gauze can provide extra protection from accidental snags. Always be gentle when putting on or taking off the harness to prevent any pulling or tugging on the tube.

Watch out for signs of irritation or redness around the tube site, or if your cat seems uncomfortable or is trying to remove the harness themselves. These could indicate that the harness might be too tight or not fitting properly.

For personalized advice tailored to your cat's specific needs, I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We’d be happy to help make sure your kitty stays comfy and safe!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
