Cat fiercely battled a wolf spider...

I'm hoping for some advice or reassurance here. My cat, Whiskers, a feisty little furball, decided to take on a wolf spider last night. We live in a pretty rural area, and it’s not uncommon to see these massive spiders scuttling around, but I honestly never expected her to go full gladiator on one. I think she saw it as a threat or maybe just a really intriguing toy. Anyway, after the tussle, she seemed fine, but this morning she’s been acting a bit off, mostly lethargic and not her usual self. I’m freaking out a little—should I be worried about venom or something? Anyone else have experience with their pets interacting with creepy crawlies like this? I’d love any input or advice you could share. Thanks so much!

Answer

Hi there! It sounds like your cat had quite the adventure with that wolf spider. Cats are naturally curious and playful, so it’s not uncommon for them to engage with insects and spiders. Fortunately, wolf spiders are typically not dangerous to cats. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Spiders can sometimes bite, and while wolf spider venom isn't harmful to cats, a bite could cause mild irritation. Keep an eye out for any redness, swelling, or if your cat is licking the area excessively. These could be signs of irritation or an allergic reaction.

In terms of at-home care, gently clean the area with mild soap and water if you suspect a bite. Keep your cat from scratching or licking the area by distracting them with toys or a cozy spot to rest. If your cat seems particularly bothered, contact a vet for advice.

Monitor your cat for changes in behavior, such as lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, as these could indicate a more serious problem, albeit rare in these cases.

If you notice any concerning symptoms or if you'd like additional peace of mind, it might be beneficial to book a video consult with one of our vets. They can provide personalized advice and next steps based on your cat's specific situation. Take care!
