Help, I'm feeling really worried about my cat, Luna. I noticed yesterday that she has a sort of swelling or maybe a cyst right around one of her nipples. It feels a bit firm to the touch, and she doesn’t seem to be in pain when I gently press on it, but it's definitely noticeable. Luna's about five years old and has always been a healthy indoor cat. I've checked the other nipples, and they all seem fine. I try to keep up with her vet appointments, but she's due for her next check-up soon. I'm freaking out a bit because I’ve read some scary stuff online, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s experienced something similar. Is this something I should rush to the vet for, or is it okay to monitor for a few days? Also, any tips on how to keep her comfortable until I can get her in? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hi there, thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. It’s understandable to worry when you notice something unusual like a swelling or cyst near a nipple.
There are a few possibilities for what this could be. It might be a benign cyst or an inflamed area due to an allergic reaction or insect bite. Hormonal changes can occasionally cause swelling, especially in unspayed cats. In some cases, especially in older cats, such swelling could indicate more serious conditions, like a mammary tumor.
At home, you can gently check the area for signs of redness, heat, or discharge, which might suggest an infection or abscess. Keep the area clean, and try to prevent your cat from excessively licking it. Offer a comfortable space for your cat, and monitor their behavior for any changes, like decreased appetite or lethargy.
Watch for signs that may require immediate attention, such as the swelling rapidly increasing in size, bleeding, or if your cat appears to be in pain.
It’s essential to have a professional evaluation to determine the exact cause and necessary treatment. I recommend booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians on Dial A Vet so we can assess the situation together and provide you with the best advice moving forward.
