I’m really worried about my cat, Luna, and could use some advice or reassurance. Over the past week, she’s been drinking a ton of water, way more than she usually does. I’ve also noticed that she’s peeing a lot more often, and sometimes she doesn’t quite make it to her litter box on time. She's always been super tidy with her box habits, so this is really unusual for her. Luna is around 8 years old, and up until now, she’s been super healthy. I'm worried it might be something serious. Has anyone else experienced this with their cat? Could it be a sign of diabetes or something else? We have a vet appointment next week, but I’m kind of losing my mind with worry until then. Any insights or similar experiences would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance, guys.
Hello! I'm glad you've reached out about your cat's increased drinking and urination. This behavior can be concerning and may indicate an underlying health issue.
Cats tend to drink more water and urinate frequently for several reasons. One common cause is diabetes, where the body cannot regulate blood sugar well, leading to excessive thirst and urination. Kidney issues, such as chronic kidney disease, can also cause similar symptoms. Hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid is overactive, may also be a culprit.
To help at home, ensure your cat always has access to fresh, clean water. Monitor their litter box habits to gauge the frequency and amount of urination. It can be helpful to note any changes in appetite, weight, or activity levels, as these details are useful when discussing your cat's health with a vet.
Keep an eye out for signs that need immediate attention, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weight loss, or any changes in personality. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires prompt veterinary care.
For a thorough evaluation and tailored advice, I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can provide guidance specific to your cat’s situation, ensuring the best care possible.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
