Thanks for the question! I'm sorry to hear about your cat's nail issue. A broken nail can be painful for your feline friend, especially if the quick—the sensitive tissue under the nail—is exposed.
There are several reasons why a cat might break a nail. It could happen during play, from scratching surfaces, or if the nail became snagged on something. Cats with brittle nails or health issues may also experience this more frequently.
For immediate at-home care, you can gently clean the area with a mild antiseptic to prevent infection. Be careful and calm as your cat might be sensitive in that area due to pain. Applying a little bit of pressure with a clean cloth can help stop any bleeding. Ensure your cat stays indoors and keeps the paw clean until it heals.
Watch for signs of infection or serious injury—swelling, redness, pus, or if your cat is limping or excessively licking their paw. If you notice any of these, or if your cat seems in a lot of pain, it's best to seek veterinary advice.
If you have further concerns or if the wound doesn’t seem to be healing, I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. We can offer guidance specific to your cat’s needs.
Cat broken nail, Quick visible
I'm really freaking out right now and could use some advice from fellow cat parents. I just noticed that my cat, Whiskers, has a nail that looks broken, and it's kind of pinkish at the base. He’s been limping a bit and licking it nonstop, and I've caught him hissing when he accidentally puts pressure on it. I have no idea how it happened, and I feel awful for not noticing sooner. It looks like it might be painful for him, and I'm worried it could get infected or something. I’m unsure if this requires an immediate vet visit or if there's anything I can do at home to help him. Any suggestions on how to ease his discomfort or if bandaging is a good idea? Also, how critical is it to keep him from grooming it? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer—I'm just so worried about him.
