Cat ate string, likely several days ago

I'm starting to really panic and could use some help. I have a cat named Whiskers who I think might have eaten a piece of string a few days back. I've noticed a few things that are getting me worried sick. At first, he was just a bit more lethargic than usual, which I chalked up to maybe just an off day. But now he's stopped eating and is hiding away in weird spots around the apartment, which isn't like him at all. I remember finding part of a string toy he was playing with last week, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Now I'm connecting the dots and wondering if he's in some serious trouble. His usual vet can't see him until next week, and I don't know if I should take him somewhere else or if I'm overreacting. What would you guys suggest? Has anyone else been through something similar with their fur babies? I'm really worried.

Answer

Hello there! I understand how concerning it can be when your cat gets into something they shouldn't, like a piece of string. Cats seem to have a knack for curiosity, sometimes getting them into sticky situations.

When a cat ingests string, it can sometimes pass through their digestive system without causing issues. However, strings and similar objects can also cause serious problems, like blockages. If your cat is acting normally—eating, drinking, and using the litter box as usual—it may suggest the string has passed or is moving through without trouble.

However, watch for signs that could indicate a blockage or another issue. These include vomiting, refusing to eat, abdominal pain (often revealed by a reluctance to have their tummy touched), lethargy, or changes in litter box habits. If you notice a string dangling from your cat's mouth or bottom, never pull on it, as that could cause internal damage.

In situations like these, it's crucial to keep an eye on your furry friend and act swiftly if you notice any worrying symptoms. Since time can be of the essence, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can offer more personalized guidance and determine if a visit to your local vet is necessary.
