Question:

Cat ate a piece of leaf from lily

everyone. I'm really freaking out right now and could use some advice or reassurance. I have a beautiful 3-year-old orange tabby named Pumpkin, and he just nibbled on a piece of a lily leaf. I know lilies can be seriously poisonous to cats, and I'm panicking because I didn’t notice until it was too late. I rushed to take the plant out of his reach, but I'm worried sick about what might happen next. It’s the middle of the night here, and I’m debating whether to rush him to an emergency vet or wait until morning. Has anyone else gone through this with their kitty? How did you handle it, and what symptoms should I be looking out for? I'd appreciate any advice, stories, or words of comfort. Thanks in advance, everyone.

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear your cat has had a nibble on a lily leaf. Lilies are quite beautiful, but unfortunately, they can be very dangerous for cats. Even a small amount of any part of the plant—leaves, petals, pollen—can lead to serious issues, particularly kidney failure.

Symptoms to watch for include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and increased urination, which can progress to decreased urination as kidney function worsens. These signs can appear within a few hours of ingestion.

For now, it’s essential to monitor your cat closely. If you see any symptoms, bring them in for veterinary care as soon as possible. In the meantime, ensure your cat stays well-hydrated with plenty of fresh water available. It's a good idea to remove any remaining lilies from your home to prevent further accidental ingestion.

Keep a watchful eye, and remember, immediate veterinary attention is vital if symptoms arise. Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, so err on the side of caution.

It’s always best to consult directly with a veterinarian in situations like these. I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet for personalized guidance. Stay calm, and we’ll guide you through this together.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
