I completely understand why you're worried. Jaundice in cats is usually a sign that something isn't quite right with the liver or the red blood cells. In your 12-year-old feline friend, the increase in liver levels despite treatment suggests that we might be dealing with something complex.
A few potential causes could include liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or even a hemolytic anemia where the body is destroying red blood cells, leading to an overload of bilirubin, which causes jaundice. In older cats, cancers like lymphoma can also be a factor, as can infections or exposure to toxins.
At home, ensure your cat remains well-hydrated and encourage eating, as good nutrition is important for liver health. Offer small, frequent meals of their preferred wet food to maintain their energy.
Watch for signs like lethargy, vomiting, or changes in appetite, which could signal worsening. If you notice any of these, seek veterinary attention promptly.
I recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can dive deeper into your cat’s history and current condition to explore further tests or treatment strategies that could offer more clarity.
Cat (12M) developed jaundice with no other symptoms; liver levels continue to increase despite treatment and vets are stumped. Do y'all have any idea what it might be?
Help, I'm at a loss right now and really worried about my old buddy, Whiskers. He's 12 and has always been in pretty good health, but out of nowhere, he started looking a bit yellow around his eyes and ears. We rushed him to the vet a couple of weeks ago, and they confirmed it was jaundice, but they can't seem to figure out what's causing it. We've started treatment, but his liver levels just keep going up and it's driving me insane with worry. He's still eating and wandering around the house like nothing's wrong, and that's what's so confusing! Has anyone else dealt with anything like this? I feel like I'm missing something or maybe there's a vet out there who knows a bit more about what this could be.
