Question:

Can't get cat to take pills. Wait until Monday for different method or keep trying?

I'm feeling really stressed and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Luna, needs to take her medication, but she refuses to swallow her pills no matter what I try. I've attempted the classic hiding-it-in-food trick, even smearing it in her favorite tuna, but she just sniffs it and walks away with disdain. I've also gone the route of trying to gently pop it in her mouth, but she turns into a wriggling ball of fury, and I just can't do it alone. Her vet suggested a liquid form might be available, but they're closed until Monday. I'm torn between risking stressing her out more by persisting this weekend or waiting and seeing if the vet can prescribe something easier to administer. Has anyone been through something similar and found a magic solution that doesn't involve trauma for both of us? Thanks in advance for any suggestions—I just want to do right by my little furball.

Answer:

Hi there! I completely understand how frustrating it can be when your cat refuses to take their pills. Cats are notoriously fussy about taking medication, and it's not uncommon for them to resist.

There are a few reasons your cat might be having difficulty. It may be the taste, size, or the unfamiliar sensation of a pill that’s off-putting. To make things easier, you might try wrapping the pill in a small amount of soft food or a treat, perhaps even hiding it in their favorite snack. Some pet owners also find success using a pill dispenser or syringe that can gently place the pill at the back of the cat's mouth.

For now, keep an eye on your cat for any signs of worsening symptoms, like changes in behavior, appetite, or energy level, which might indicate that a visit to a vet is necessary. If your cat becomes overly stressed or you see any signs that concern you, it might be worth chatting with a vet sooner rather than waiting until Monday.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
