Help, what do I do? My puppy, Max, has been bouncing off the walls since this morning, and I’m kind of freaking out. I started him on Panacur yesterday for worms, and ever since, he’s been acting completely hyper — way more than his usual playful self. He’s running around the house at top speed, barking at random corners, and barely sitting still for a minute. I know puppies have tons of energy, but this feels different, almost like he’s stuck on a sugar rush or something. It’s so unlike him, and I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence or if the meds could be causing this. Has anyone else experienced something similar, or am I just being a worried pet parent?
I completely understand why you're worried about your puppy's recent behavior. Panacur (fenbendazole) is a common deworming medication used to treat intestinal parasites in dogs, and it's typically well-tolerated by most puppies. However, it's natural to be vigilant about any changes in your pup after giving them any new medication.
Hyperactivity itself isn't directly linked as a side effect of Panacur, but it's possible that your puppy is just feeling better now that they're being relieved of intestinal parasites. Increased energy could mean they’re less uncomfortable and more excited to play and explore. Other factors such as changes in diet, routine, or environment might also contribute to a spike in energy levels.
If your puppy is displaying excessive restlessness, behaviors like pacing, or out-of-the-ordinary behaviors, consider creating a calm environment. Provide plenty of opportunities for play and exercise to help them burn off some energy healthily.
Keep an eye out for signs that might suggest a more serious issue, such as vomiting, diarrhea, noticeable discomfort, or any allergic reactions like hives or swelling. If you spot these or if your puppy’s hyperactivity seems extreme and persistent, it’s a good idea to seek veterinary guidance.
To ensure everything is in check, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet, who can delve deeper into your puppy's specific situation.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately.
