Question:

Can I split a full dose of revolution between my adult cat and kitten?

I really need some advice here and I'm hoping someone can help. I just realized I'm almost out of Revolution, the flea treatment, and it's the only thing that really works for both my adult cat, Whiskers, and my new kitten, Luna. I have one full dose left, and my vet's office is closed for the weekend, so I'm a bit in a bind. Is it safe to split the dose between the two of them? Whiskers is a chunky boy, around 12 pounds, and Luna is just a little thing at 3 pounds. I'm worried since I know dosing can be tricky, especially with the little one. I don’t want to do anything that could harm them, and I feel awful for not planning better. Any advice or similar experiences would be so appreciated right now. Thank you!

Answer:

Hi there! It’s great that you’re considering the best way to protect both your adult cat and kitten from parasites, but it’s essential to be cautious when it comes to dosing medications like Revolution.

Revolution is specifically dosed based on an animal's weight, and splitting a dose can lead to inaccurate dosing. This can not only make the treatment less effective, potentially leaving your pets vulnerable to fleas, ticks, and other parasites, but it might also risk overdosing, especially for your kitten. Kittens are more sensitive to medications, and even a slight overdose can lead to side effects such as vomiting or lethargy.

At home, you should monitor both your cat and kitten for any signs of skin irritation, unusual behavior, or illness, especially if they’ve been given an incorrect dose. If any signs appear, or if they're scratching more than usual, it could be a signal of inadequate protection or an adverse reaction.

I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can help personalize the right dosage plan for both your cats, ensuring they’re safe and well-protected. It’ll give you peace of mind knowing they’re getting the best care tailored just for them. Looking forward to helping you and your furry friends!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
