Can I give my pup dog aspirin?

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and could really use some advice. My sweet little Baxter, who's a 3-year-old golden retriever, has been limping a lot lately after our walks. He seems to be in some discomfort, especially when he tries to climb onto the couch – his favorite spot! I’ve read a bit online about giving dog aspirin to help with pain, but I’m worried about safe dosages and potential side effects. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I’m just so anxious to make sure I’m doing the right thing for him. Any guidance or personal experiences would be extremely appreciated! Thank you in advance, from both me and Baxter. 🐾

Answer

Hello there! It's great that you're reaching out with questions about your pup’s health—being proactive is always the best course. Giving aspirin to your dog can be a bit tricky and is generally not advised without a vet's supervision. Aspirin, even in small doses, can cause stomach irritation or even ulcers in dogs.

If your pup is experiencing pain or inflammation, it's essential to determine the underlying cause first. Common reasons for discomfort could be an injury, arthritis, or even dental issues. But before you reach for any medication, I suggest trying some simple at-home care: ensure your dog is resting comfortably and has a cozy, quiet spot to recuperate. An occasional gentle massage might provide some relief as well.

Keep a close eye on your pup. If you notice signs like vomiting, diarrhea, a decrease in appetite, or lethargy, these could indicate more serious issues that need immediate attention. Bleeding, swollen joints, or persistent limping are also red flags.

To ensure your furry friend gets the right care, I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They can provide a more detailed assessment and safe, tailored advice. Take care!
