Can I give my 12 pound chihuahua mutt miralax or similar?

Help, what do I do? My little 12-pound chihuahua mix, Bella, hasn't been herself lately, and I'm starting to get really worried. She's been having some trouble going to the bathroom, and it breaks my heart to see her uncomfortable and straining. I read somewhere that Miralax might help, but I'm not sure if it's safe for dogs, especially one so small. I really don't want to do anything that could hurt her. Have any of you ever given Miralax or anything similar to your pups? I've tried adding more fiber to her diet and making sure she's drinking enough water, but nothing seems to be working. I love Bella more than anything, and I'm desperate for suggestions before rushing off to the vet. Any advice or personal experiences would be so appreciated!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your question! It sounds like your Chihuahua might be dealing with some constipation, which can certainly be uncomfortable for little ones.

Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) can be used to help dogs with constipation, but it’s important to use it under the guidance of a vet. In small doses, it can safely increase water in the intestines, making it easier for your dog to pass stools. However, the dosage depends on your dog's specific needs, including weight and the severity of the constipation, so it's crucial to get a vet's recommendation.

There are also a few at-home tips you can try: ensure your dog is well-hydrated, as water intake is critical for easing constipation. Providing a fiber-rich diet can help, so you might consider adding small amounts of plain pumpkin puree to their food. Regular exercise also aids in healthy digestion.

Keep an eye out for signs of a more serious issue, such as vomiting, lethargy, blood in the stool, or if your dog is repeatedly trying to defecate without success. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's best to have your pup examined by a vet as soon as possible.

I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet so we can discuss the best plan for your dog's needs. We're here to help!
