Can I feed my kids hamsters bird seed as a last resort?

I’m in a bit of a jam and could use some advice! It’s late, and I just realized we’re out of hamster food for our kids’ two little fur balls, Pippa and Nibbles. The pet store’s closed, and I won’t be able to get there until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. I feel awful about them having to go hungry until then. I’ve got a bag of bird seed that looks kind of similar to their usual mix — is it okay to give them this just for tonight and maybe tomorrow morning? I don't want to risk making them sick either; they mean the world to my kiddos. Any tips on what I can safely give them until I can grab the usual stuff?

Answer

You're doing the right thing by asking! I'm glad you reached out about this. Feeding your kids' hamsters bird seed isn’t ideal, but I understand sometimes you might not have the right food on hand. Hamsters have different dietary needs compared to birds, and while bird seed isn’t toxic, it's not formulated for their nutritional requirements.

Hamsters typically need a diet that's rich in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and low in fat. Bird seeds are often high in fat and may not provide all the necessary nutrients. If you're in a pinch, a very small amount of plain bird seed might be okay for a day or two, but it shouldn’t become their main diet.

In the meantime, you can offer small portions of fresh vegetables like carrots or broccoli, or fruits like apples (just make sure they're free of seeds and pits). Also, be mindful of any changes in your hamster’s behavior or droppings – lethargy, diarrhea, or significant weight loss can indicate dietary issues.

If you're concerned or notice any of these signs, it would be a good idea to book a video consult with one of the veterinarians on Dial A Vet to ensure your little friends are healthy and well-fed.
