Can dead cats have their eyes closed? My cat was found dead with eyes closed and now I'm questioning if she was dead.

I'm really struggling with something and could really use some advice or insights. My beloved cat, Whiskers, who has been my little shadow for years, recently passed away. I found her lying peacefully with her eyes closed, and it's been eating me up inside. I've always heard that animals usually pass with their eyes open, and now I'm second-guessing if she was actually gone when I found her. Did I miss something? Could there have been a chance she was still alive? The thought that I might not have acted quickly enough to help her is just tearing me apart. I want to make sure I did everything I could for her, but this lingering doubt is so hard to shake. If anyone has experiences with their pets that might help me understand, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

Answer

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It's always difficult to process the passing of a beloved pet. To answer your question, yes, it's possible for cats to pass away with their eyes closed. A cat's body can relax differently after passing, which may lead to their eyes closing. Some cats might also close their eyes while sleeping due to complete relaxation, which might look similar after passing.

There are signs that can help confirm that a cat has indeed passed away, such as the absence of a heartbeat, lack of breathing, and a drop in body temperature. Rigidity in their body, known as rigor mortis, also occurs a few hours after death.

If you're worried about how your cat passed or are questioning if she was truly gone, those feelings are completely understandable. Rest assured, cats often pass silently and without much sign, so it’s unlikely she was still alive if you discovered her in this state.

Remember, let yourself mourn. Take comfort in the cherished memories you shared.
