Question:

Can anybody tell me if i should be in full panic mode about this thing on my dog?

I’m really freaking out and could use some advice. I just noticed this weird lump on my dog, Baxter. It’s kind of firm and about the size of a grape, and it’s on his right side, near his ribs. I have no idea how long it’s been there because I only found it while giving him a belly rub this morning. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by it at all, but of course, now I’m all worried. He’s a 5-year-old Labrador, super active and healthy otherwise, but I can’t stop thinking about the worst-case scenarios. I just can’t shake the fear that it might be something serious. I’ve read so many conflicting things online, and I’m not sure if I should run to the vet, or if I’m just overreacting. Have any of you experienced something like this with your pups? How worried should I be right now? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer—I’m kind of stressing out here.

Answer:

Hello there! It’s completely understandable to feel worried when you notice something unusual on your dog. Let’s take a calm look at what this “thing” might be. Often, lumps or bumps on dogs are benign, like cysts or lipomas, which are fatty growths that are generally harmless. However, it could also be an insect bite, a wart, or a skin infection.

Here’s what you can do at home: observe the lump’s size, shape, color, and if it’s causing your dog any discomfort. If the lump changes rapidly, is firm, discolored, or seems painful, those are signs that it should be checked by a vet sooner rather than later. Also, if your dog is licking or scratching it excessively or if there's any bleeding or pus, that warrants a closer look.

In the meantime, keep the area clean and prevent your dog from aggravating it by using an Elizabethan collar if needed. Monitor the lump over a few days, noting any changes or additional symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or limping.

To get peace of mind, let's schedule a video consult with one of our expert vets on Dial A Vet. They can assess your dog’s condition more thoroughly and guide you on the next best steps.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
