Question:

Broken Leg, Is Surgery Necessary (6mo puppy)

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now and could really use some advice. My sweet six-month-old puppy, Bella, had a little accident yesterday. We were at the park, and she was having the time of her life chasing after her favorite frisbee when she landed awkwardly and started limping. I rushed her to the vet and they told me she has a broken leg. The vet suggested surgery to fix it, but it feels like such a big decision, especially with her being so young. I'm worried about the risks and the cost is significant too. Has anyone else been through something similar with their fur baby? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on whether surgery was the best route or if there are other options I should consider. Thank you all so much in advance for your help—I just want to make the best decision for my little Bella.

Answer:

Hello there!

I’m sorry to hear about your puppy’s leg. It can be quite distressing to see them in pain, but let's go over some important information to help you take the next steps.

A broken leg, or fracture, in a puppy often results from a fall, accident, or sometimes even rough play. In young dogs, their bones are still growing and can be more susceptible to breaks.

Surgery is a common treatment for a broken leg, especially if the fracture is severe, displaced, or involves a joint. However, in some cases, especially those affecting the long bones, a splint or cast might be sufficient. Each situation is unique and depends on the fracture's location, type, and severity.

At home, you can help by keeping your puppy as still and comfortable as possible. Limit their movement and provide a cozy, confined space where they can rest. Ensure they have food and water within easy reach.

Watch for signs of pain like whimpering or reluctance to move, swelling, or any changes in appetite. If your puppy seems distressed or if you notice any open wounds, visible bones, or an inability to bear weight, it needs urgent veterinary attention.

I recommend scheduling a video consult on Dial A Vet to discuss your puppy's condition with a vet. They can offer specific advice and help you decide on the best course of action. All the best to you and your puppy!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
