folks, I’m reaching out because I’m seriously at my wit’s end here and could really use some advice. We recently moved to a new place, and since the move, both of my cats have been having urinary issues due to what the vet calls "mineral build-up." I’ve tried switching their food to a urinary-health formula, making sure their water intake is higher by adding wet food to their diet, and even getting a water fountain to encourage them to drink more, but nothing seems to be working. It's been a stressful time for all of us, and it's breaking my heart to see them in discomfort. Has anyone else gone through this? Are there any tips or tricks that worked for you? I’m desperate for any suggestions that might help my fur babies get back to feeling their best. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! I’m sorry to hear about your kitties going through this. It sounds like they might be dealing with urinary crystals, which are pretty common but can be uncomfortable and even painful for them. Moving to a new home can be stressful, and stress can sometimes contribute to urinary issues. Changes in their environment, such as new water sources or different water quality, can also play a role.
To help at home, make sure your cats have access to plenty of fresh, clean water. Staying well-hydrated can help dilute their urine and reduce the likelihood of crystal formation. Some cats prefer running water, like from a pet fountain. Also, consider providing them with wet food if they’re not already on it, as it can increase their overall water intake.
Keep an eye on your cats for signs of a more serious problem, such as straining to urinate, going to the litter box frequently without producing much urine, or any signs of distress like yowling or licking their genital area excessively. If you notice any blood in the urine or if they seem unable to urinate at all, seek immediate veterinary help, as a blockage can be life-threatening.
I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets through Dial A Vet to discuss tailored strategies for your cats' needs. They can provide more personalized advice and guide you on the next best steps. Take care!
