black dot on cat's nose (F, 12)

I'm reaching out because I'm feeling pretty anxious about something I've noticed on my cat, Luna, who’s a 12-year-old indoor-only tortoiseshell. This morning, I spotted a small black dot on her nose that I've never seen before. It's not raised, doesn’t seem to bother her when I touch it gently, and she’s eating and playing like her usual self, but I can't help worrying! Has anyone experienced something similar with their fur babies? I’m torn between monitoring it for a few days to see if it changes, or just hauling her off to the vet right away. I’m hoping one of you might have some insight or advice while I try not to Google myself into a panic. Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer

Hello, and thank you for reaching out about your kitty! Noticing a black dot on your cat's nose can be a little concerning, but let's go through what it might be.

In older cats, changes like a black dot can sometimes be a harmless condition known as lentigo, which is similar to freckles in humans. It's common and typically nothing to worry about, especially if it doesn't change in size or color over time.

However, if this dot is raised, growing, or has an uneven edge, it might be worth keeping a close eye on it. In some cases, new skin changes can indicate something more serious, such as a skin infection, an allergic reaction, or, rarely, a form of skin cancer.

At home, ensure your cat is comfortable and monitor any changes in the dot's size, shape, or color. Also, check if your cat is experiencing any itching or discomfort.

Signs to look out for that might indicate it's time to seek immediate care include the dot growing rapidly, bleeding, or if your cat seems very bothered by it.

Given your cat's age and the new development, it might be helpful to book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet to take a closer look and ease your mind. We're here to help!
