Question:

Birthday donut for a sick cat??

I really need some advice. My sweet kitty, Luna, is turning 10 tomorrow, and I'd love to do something special for her. Here's the thing: she hasn't been feeling well lately. We've been back and forth to the vet, and I suspect it's just age catching up with her, but it breaks my heart to see her not as chipper as she used to be. I was thinking about getting her a special treat, like a cat-friendly "donut" for her birthday, but I'm worried it might upset her stomach or do more harm than good. Have any of you tried this kind of treat for a cat, especially one with a delicate tummy? I just want her to have a little joy on her big day without making her feel worse. Any advice or suggestions would be so appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! It's understandable to want to celebrate your furry friend's birthday, but if your cat isn't feeling well, it's best to be cautious about what you offer as a treat. Cats have very sensitive stomachs, and introducing something unusual like a donut – especially those intended for humans – could upset their digestion further. Human donuts are high in sugar and sometimes contain ingredients like chocolate, which can be toxic to cats.

If your cat is showing signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a decrease in appetite, it's important to focus on a bland diet or simply their regular cat food until they are feeling better. Make sure they have access to fresh water and monitor them for any changes.

Watch out for serious symptoms like persistent vomiting, difficulty breathing, or if they stop eating and drinking altogether. These could indicate a more severe issue that requires immediate veterinary attention.

Instead of a donut, you might consider offering a small, plain cooked chicken or fish piece (without any seasonings) as a more tummy-friendly treat once they’re feeling a bit better.

If you're concerned about your cat's health or want more personalized guidance, I'd recommend booking a video consultation with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet. We'll be happy to help you both celebrate your kitty's special day in the safest way possible!

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
