Question:

Best sling harness for dogs?

I really need some advice and I’m kind of at my wit’s end here. My sweet, older dog, Max, has been struggling with his back legs lately, and it's heartbreaking to watch. He's starting to have trouble going up and down the stairs, which has never been a problem before. I’ve heard about sling harnesses and think they might be just what Max needs to help him get around more comfortably. However, I’m completely overwhelmed with the options out there and unsure which one would be best for him. Has anyone been in a similar situation and found a sling harness that was durable and comfortable for their dog? I don’t want to make him feel more uncomfortable, just want to give my old buddy some support. Any recommendations or tips would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like you're considering a sling harness for your dog, and that's a fantastic tool for providing extra support, especially if your furry friend is dealing with issues like arthritis, recovering from surgery, or facing mobility challenges due to age or injury.

When looking for a sling harness, consider the following: comfort for your dog, ease of use for you, and the presence of adjustable straps for a good fit. It's important that the harness is made from soft, breathable materials to prevent any chafing or discomfort. You might want to check if it's machine washable too, as that makes it easier to keep clean.

At home, ensure that the sling harness is positioned correctly to provide balanced support to your dog's body. Start by gently guiding your dog with the harness for short periods to let them get used to it. Always monitor your dog for any signs of discomfort or pain, such as whining, restlessness, or avoidance of activity.

If you notice any of these signs or if your dog seems worse or in pain while using the sling, it’s best to stop using it and reach out for professional advice. In the case of swelling, persistent limping, or if your dog seems unwell, it’s important to get them looked at as these can be signs of a more serious issue.

To ensure you’re choosing the right harness and using it effectively, consider booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. We're here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
