Benign lump in primordial pouch filling with liquid. Is surgery our only choice?

I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now and could really use some advice. My sweet 4-year-old cat, Luna, has developed a benign lump in her primordial pouch, and I’ve been closely monitoring it ever since our vet assured us it wasn’t anything malignant. Recently, I noticed the lump has been filling with liquid, making it more prominent and putting pressure on her belly. She seems a bit more lethargic, but thankfully she’s still eating and being her affectionate self. The vet mentioned surgery as an option because if it keeps filling, it could affect her usual activities. But I'm hesitant to put her through an operation since she’s normally so laid-back and hates even simple vet visits. Have any of you been through something similar with your cats? I'd love to hear about non-surgical treatments if they exist or just any comforting advice you might have. Thanks so much in advance.

Answer

Hello there! I understand how concerning it can be to notice changes in your pet’s primordial pouch. A fluid-filled lump in this area can stem from a few possible causes, such as a benign cyst, an abscess from a localized infection, or even a small hernia.

Most benign lumps, like cysts or abscesses, don’t necessarily require surgery right away. At home, you can gently apply a warm compress to the area a few times a day, which may help reduce any inflammation or discomfort your pet might be experiencing. Ensure that the area stays clean and monitor it for changes.

However, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs that might indicate a more serious issue. If the lump grows rapidly, becomes painful, or if your pet shows signs of distress like lethargy, loss of appetite, or fever, it’s crucial to seek veterinary attention promptly as these may signal an infection or more serious condition.

While surgery might be an option eventually, it really depends on the exact nature and cause of the lump. Getting a thorough evaluation from a veterinarian will provide clarity and guide you on the best course of action for your furry friend.

I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals to discuss your pet’s symptoms in detail and explore your options together. They’ll be able to help you decide the best next steps.
