everyone. I'm feeling really anxious and could use some advice. My beloved golden retriever, Max, just had surgery for an aural hematoma a few days ago. At first, things seemed to be going okay, but now I’m not so sure. The area where the vet operated looks kind of swollen—more than I expected. It's pretty red and feels a bit warm to the touch. Is this normal at this stage? The surgery was supposed to help, but now I’m worried I might have ignored something important. Max doesn’t seem too bothered, but then again, he’s always been a tough cookie. I’ve been following the vet’s instructions—cleaning it gently and making sure he doesn’t scratch—but this lingering feeling that something might be wrong won’t go away. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice or reassurance would mean the world to me right now. Thanks!
Hi there! I completely understand your concern—dealing with an ear hematoma after surgery can be a bit stressful. An ear hematoma is essentially a pocket of blood that forms in the ear flap, often due to trauma or excessive shaking. After surgery, it's normal for the ear to look somewhat swollen and sore, but it should gradually improve over the next week or so.
In terms of what looks normal, you might see some slight swelling, bruising, or fluid build-up under the skin. However, if you notice excessive swelling, discharge, foul odors, or if your pet seems to be in significant pain, it's important to take action. These could be signs of infection or complications that require immediate attention.
At home, keep an eye on the surgical site and ensure your pet isn't scratching or shaking their head too much—an Elizabethan collar can help with this. Gently clean the area with a vet-recommended antiseptic if necessary, and ensure your pet gets plenty of rest to aid healing.
If you're unsure how things are progressing or if you notice any concerning signs, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Please consider booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet to take a closer look and provide you with peace of mind. Take care!
