I'm feeling really anxious and could use some advice. My sweet Golden Retriever, Max, who’s 9 years old, was experiencing a lot of pain from arthritis, and our vet suggested we try Librela for him. He got his first shot a week ago, and since then, he’s been having trouble with his coordination. His back legs seem wobbly when he's walking, and he’s stumbling around more than usual. It’s heartbreaking to see him like this because he’s usually so lively despite his age. The vet mentioned that side effects are rare, but I can't help but worry. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their dog after a Librela injection? Does the ataxia improve as the drug wears off? I just want my buddy to feel better and get back to chasing his favorite ball. Any insight or similar experiences would mean the world to me. Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear about your pet's recent experience with ataxia following their first Librela shot. Ataxia, which is a loss of control over body movements, can be concerning, and it’s understandable that you’re seeking answers.
Librela, a pain management drug for dogs, is generally well-tolerated, but like any medication, it can occasionally cause side effects. Ataxia could be linked to an individual reaction to the medication, though it's not a common side effect.
The good news is that, in some cases, side effects can diminish as the drug wears off. Monitoring your pet closely over the next few days is key. Ensure they have a safe environment where they can rest without risk of injury, provide plenty of water, and keep activities calm and low-stress.
However, it’s important to watch for signs that might suggest more serious issues. These include persistent or worsening ataxia, difficulty breathing, severe lethargy, or any changes in eating and drinking habits.
Since ataxia can have various causes, not just related to Librela, scheduling a video consult with one of our vets could help in assessing your pet’s situation more closely. This way, we can discuss what you’re observing and decide on any next steps to ensure your pet’s well-being.
