I'm really feeling worried about my dog and could use some advice. My 9-year-old lab mix, Max, has always been a pretty hearty eater but over the past couple of days, he’s just refused to touch his food. I’ve tried everything I can think of—different brands, softer food, even some cooked chicken and rice which he usually loves, but nada. He’s also been more lethargic than usual and seems a bit sad. We went to the vet yesterday, and they ran some tests, but we're waiting on the results, and it's just really hard not knowing what's going on with him. He’s been my buddy through so much, and it’s so hard to see him like this. Has anyone gone through something similar? If you have any ideas or things I should ask the vet or maybe something comforting you’ve done for your fur babies in times like these, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear your dog isn't feeling well and has lost their appetite. Let’s go through some possibilities and steps you can take at home.
Loss of appetite in dogs can result from various issues, such as minor problems like an upset stomach due to eating something unusual, or more concerning conditions like dental issues, infections, or more serious illnesses affecting the organs. Since your dog is 9 years old, age-related conditions like arthritis or kidney issues could also cause decreased interest in food.
To help your pup at home, try offering bland foods like boiled chicken and rice, which are easier on the stomach. Ensure they have access to fresh water, as hydration is crucial. Also, observe if there are any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, or lethargy, which could indicate something more serious.
If your dog refuses to eat for more than 24 hours or shows any of the additional symptoms I mentioned, it’s time to act promptly.
Let’s make sure your furry friend gets the right care. I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet so we can thoroughly evaluate your dog’s condition and decide on the best next steps. We're here to help!
