As a vet, have you noticed that pet owners trust you less than in the past?

I really need some insight from the vets here. Lately, I've been feeling like I'm questioning my vet's advice more than I used to, and it's making me uneasy. I'm not sure if it's just me being overly cautious or if there's something more to it. My golden retriever, Baxter, has been having some health issues, and I can't shake the feeling that I'm not getting the full picture, despite our vet's experience and qualifications. Don't get me wrong; they're super kind and always willing to explain things, but I find myself second-guessing their recommendations and often turning to the internet for more information. It's not like I had a bad experience or anything—I just feel this nagging distrust. Is this something that's becoming more common? Do any vets here feel like more of us pet owners are second-guessing professional advice these days? I'm worried that my anxiety might be getting in the way of Baxter getting the care he needs. Would love to hear your thoughts or similar experiences!

Answer

Hi there! That's a really interesting question and an important topic to think about. Trust between vets and pet owners is crucial because it directly impacts the care that pets receive. In my experience, the core of that trust hasn't changed much; most pet owners deeply care about their pets and want the best for them.

However, with the internet providing so much information, it’s understandable that some pet owners might have more questions or doubts. That's completely normal! Many people nowadays do a lot more research online before, during, and after visits to the vet, which means they sometimes come in with preconceived ideas or self-diagnoses.

My role is to work as part of a team with pet owners, answering questions and providing clear, honest, and compassionate explanations to help support your pet's health. Open communication is key, and I'm always happy to discuss concerns you might have about any advice or treatment plans.

If you ever feel unsure, it's important to have those questions addressed promptly. Booking a video consult can be a great way to talk things through and feel more confident in the care decisions for your pet. We're here to help you every step of the way!
