Help, I'm really worried about my dog, Max. He had surgery a week ago, and they used staples to close the incision. I’ve been trying to keep the area clean and dry, just like the vet instructed, but I'm starting to get concerned. The area around the staples looks a bit red and swollen, and I'm not sure if that's a normal part of the healing process or if something might be wrong. Max has been a little more lethargic than usual, and he's not as eager to go for his walks, which is totally unlike him. I'm anxious because the vet’s office doesn't open until Monday, and I don't want to overreact or underreact. Has anyone gone through this with their pup before? What did you notice as part of a normal healing process versus signs of infection? Any advice on how to keep the staples clean and dry would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!
Thanks for reaching out with your concern! It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious when it comes to your pet's healing process. If your pet had staples placed for a wound or surgical site, there are several things you can look for to ensure proper healing.
First, you’ll want to make sure the area around the staples appears clean and dry. Slight redness and swelling right after the procedure can be normal, but this should gradually improve. Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, which might include excessive redness, swelling, discharge, or an unpleasant odor.
It's important to prevent your pet from licking or chewing at the staples, as this can introduce bacteria and cause irritation. An E-collar or a soft recovery collar can be helpful for this. Ensure that your pet's staples aren't pulling or tugging, as this might indicate a need for adjustment.
If you notice any increased swelling, bleeding, or if your pet seems unusually lethargic or in pain, these can be signs that a vet should take another look. It’s always best to address potential concerns early.
