I’m really in need of some advice right now. My sweet dog, Max, has been having seizures, and I'm terrified. I just don't know what to do. I've been to our local vet, but they recommended a specialist because they're worried it might be something neurological. The thing is, the nearest veterinary neurologist is several hours away, and with my current work schedule, it's so hard to make the trip. I’ve been searching everywhere for a veterinary neurologist who might do online consultations, but I’m not having much luck. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or know of anyone who might be able to help us out? Max means the world to me, and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can for him. Thanks in advance for any leads or advice!
Thank you for reaching out with your question! While I can’t provide a direct consultation from a veterinary neurologist right here, I can certainly offer some insights that might guide you.
Neurological issues in pets can stem from various causes, including congenital conditions, trauma, infections, or even toxins. These might manifest as seizures, changes in behavior, walking difficulties, or even abnormal eye movements. It’s helpful to observe and document any specific symptoms your pet is experiencing, including their frequency and duration.
At home, you can ensure your pet's environment is safe to prevent any injury, especially if they’re experiencing seizures or balance problems. Keep things calm and maintain a routine to reduce stress, as neurological issues can sometimes be exacerbated by stress.
Keep an eye out for any worsening signs such as severe or repeated seizures, loss of consciousness, sudden blindness, or inability to move normally. These would require immediate veterinary attention.
I recommend booking a video consultation with a vet on Dial A Vet. They can provide guidance on whether a referral to a veterinary neurologist might be necessary and what steps you should consider next. Connecting with a vet directly will give you tailored advice specific to your pet’s needs.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our
