Any suggestions/experiences with potential immune-mediated diseases?

I'm at a bit of a loss and could really use some advice or shared experiences. My 6-year-old Labrador, Max, has been having some strange health issues recently. Initially, it started with lethargy and a bit of a loss of appetite, which was unusual for him since he’s always been such an energetic and food-loving pup. We went to our vet, who did some blood work, and there were signs pointing toward a possible immune-mediated disease. They mentioned something about his immune system attacking his own cells, but they’re still running more tests to be sure. In the meantime, Max has been started on some medication, but I’m feeling so anxious about what this means long term. Have any of you dealt with something like this before with your dogs? What helped, and how did you manage the emotional aspect of it? Any tips or insights would be greatly appreciated. I'm just so worried about him and hoping for the best.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your question. Immune-mediated diseases occur when a pet's immune system mistakenly attacks its own body. Common signs include lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, joint pain, or changes in the skin, such as redness or ulcers. These symptoms can be quite distressing to see.

Some potential causes include genetics, infections, or even certain medications. Keep an eye on any new symptoms that seem persistent. At home, ensure your pet has a comfortable, stress-free environment, which can help manage symptoms. A balanced diet rich in nutrients can support their overall health, but avoid making dietary changes without guidance from a vet.

Watch for signs like difficulty breathing, severe weakness, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), or any sudden changes in behavior, as these could indicate a more serious issue needing immediate attention.

Immune-mediated diseases can be complex, and proper diagnosis usually requires blood tests and possibly a biopsy. Since treatments often include medications to suppress the immune system, accurate diagnosis is crucial. I’d recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They'll provide guidance tailored to your pet’s needs and help you with the next steps.
