Question:

Any solution to dog insistently biting at scar tissue from a scalding that happened 9 months ago?

I’m at my wit’s end and could really use some advice. My dog, Charlie, got scalded about nine months ago, and while we’ve done everything to help him heal, he just won’t stop biting at the scar tissue. It’s become such a problem that he’s reopening the wounds, and I’m terrified he’s going to cause an infection. We've tried everything from bitter sprays, to covering the area with bandages, and even using an Elizabethan collar, but nothing seems to deter him for long. It's heartbreaking to watch this because I know it must be uncomfortable or itchy for him, but I don’t want to keep putting him through the cone and stress. The vet says the scar looks fine, but I wish there was something I could do to relieve whatever is causing this obsession. Has anyone dealt with anything similar or have any recommendations on how to stop a dog from fixating on scar tissue? Thanks in advance for any suggestions—I’m really desperate for a solution.

Answer:

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about your pup's discomfort, and I understand why this would be concerning for you. When a dog persistently bites at scar tissue, it could be an indication of irritation, itchiness, or even some nerve discomfort in the area. Scar tissue can sometimes tighten the skin, causing feelings that are new or uncomfortable for your dog. It might also be a habit if your dog has been doing this for a while.

First, be sure to keep the area clean and dry. You can gently clean it with a mild, dog-safe soap and water, ensuring you rinse thoroughly. Applying a cool, damp cloth can sometimes provide temporary relief for itchiness. Try to keep your dog distracted with toys or activities that can redirect their attention away from the scar.

If you notice increased redness, swelling, or any discharge from the area, these could be signs of infection or inflammation, which would require prompt veterinary attention. Additionally, if your dog seems to be in pain or their behavior changes, these are indications a vet should take a closer look.

It might be beneficial to discuss this further with a vet to explore other options, such as protective clothing or specific creams. Feel free to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet for personalized advice and peace of mind. Your pup deserves to be comfortable and healthy!

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
