Almost 17 year old cat, eating well but losing weight.

I'm really worried about my old kitty, Bella. She's almost 17, and I’ve noticed she's eating well, maybe even better than usual, but she's still losing weight, and it's starting to freak me out. A few months ago, she was a bit on the chunky side, and now her ribs are so noticeable when I pet her. She still seems interested in food and eats eagerly when I put down her bowl. Despite her appetite, she feels lighter every week. I've heard that weight loss can be common in older cats, but this feels different. Her energy seems about the same for her age, but I can't shake the feeling that something might be wrong. Has anyone experienced this with their older cats? What could be causing her to lose weight like this?

Answer

Thanks for reaching out about your kitty! It's great to hear your cat is still eating well, but I understand why you'd be concerned about the weight loss. Several factors might be at play here. As cats age, they can develop conditions like hyperthyroidism, which increases metabolism and leads to weight loss despite a good appetite. Another possibility is kidney disease, which is common in older cats and can cause weight loss, even when appetite seems normal.

Diabetes is also a potential cause, where the body can't use sugar properly, leading to weight loss as an early sign. Dental issues, while less likely if your cat is eating well, can sometimes cause subtle changes, too.

At home, make sure your cat has access to fresh water and a comfortable environment. You might want to try feeding more nutrient-dense meals or slightly increasing meal frequency to see if it helps stabilize their weight.

Keep an eye out for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst or urination, changes in behavior, or signs of pain. If you notice any of these, it might indicate a more serious issue that requires prompt attention.
