Allergies and on Zonisamide, is OTC meds safe?

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now and could use some advice. My poor dog has been dealing with the worst allergies — constantly itching and sneezing, and it breaks my heart to see him so uncomfortable. He's currently on Zonisamide for his seizures, and I'm really worried about giving him anything that might interfere with his medication. I've heard that some over-the-counter allergy meds can help relieve these symptoms, but I don’t know which, if any, are safe to use alongside his current prescription. Have any of you dealt with something similar? What did you find works safely with Zonisamide? I’m trying not to make things worse while just trying to bring him some relief. Any guidance at all would be so appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your question! Managing a pet's health, especially when they have allergies and are on medications like Zonisamide, requires a bit of caution. Zonisamide is usually prescribed for seizure control, and while it generally doesn't interact with over-the-counter (OTC) allergy meds, there are still some precautions to take.

First, it's essential to understand that allergies in pets often manifest as scratching, biting, or licking their skin excessively. Common allergens include pollen, dust, flea bites, and some food ingredients. OTC antihistamines can provide relief, but not all human medications are safe for pets. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is often used, although dosing should be precise.

For safe at-home care, you might try a cool bath using oatmeal-based pet shampoos to soothe skin irritation. Also, keeping your pet’s bedding clean and maintaining a flea-free environment can help minimize allergic reactions.

Watch for warning signs like difficulty breathing, swelling, or more frequent seizures, as these could indicate a serious condition that needs immediate attention.
