Need some advice, please! My sweet Border Collie, Max, suddenly developed hives all over his body, and I'm freaking out a little. Yesterday morning, he was his usual energetic self, but by evening, he started scratching nonstop and got visibly uncomfortable. I noticed these red, raised bumps on his belly and back. I haven’t changed his food, but we did spend a lot of time at the park recently where he might've gotten into something. I washed him, but it doesn’t seem to have helped much. I'm scared it could be something serious. Should I rush him to the vet, or is there something I can try at home first to relieve his discomfort? He's my little buddy, and I hate seeing him like this. Thanks in advance for any insights or similar experiences you can share!
Thanks for reaching out about your dog; I know how concerning it can be to see them uncomfortable. Allergic reactions in dogs often manifest as itching, redness, hair loss, or even swelling. These reactions can be caused by various things, such as certain foods, environmental factors like pollen, or even flea bites.
For at-home care, you can try giving your dog an oatmeal bath, which can soothe itchy skin. Also, keeping their bedding and living area clean can help reduce exposure to potential allergens. If you suspect a food allergy, consider what they’ve eaten recently and watch for patterns.
However, be on the lookout for more serious signs, such as difficulty breathing, severe swelling (especially around the face and throat), or hives. These can indicate a more dangerous type of reaction that may require immediate veterinary attention.
If symptoms persist or worsen, or if you're just unsure, it’s best to consult with a vet. Allergic reactions can sometimes be tricky to pinpoint, and a vet can help diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatment. The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
