All three of my foster kittens had feline panleukopenia and had to be euthanized. How can I protect my own cats from being infected?

I’m feeling pretty devastated right now and I really need some advice. I was fostering three little kittens who all had feline panleukopenia (which I hadn’t realized until it was too late), and they had to be put down yesterday. It’s heartbreaking. Now I’m terrified for my own cats—Milo and Luna. They’ve been vaccinated, but the kittens were in the house for about two weeks and I’m scared the virus might still be lingering around. I’ve scrubbed everything, but I’m not sure if it’s enough, and I’d hate to think Milo and Luna could get sick because of me. Is there more I should be doing to keep them safe? I’m really anxious about this.

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried, and I'm so sorry to hear about your foster kittens. Feline panleukopenia is a tough virus to deal with, and it's understandable that you're concerned about your own cats.

The virus, known for causing severe gastrointestinal and immune system issues, can be transmitted through various ways, like contact with infected cats or contaminated environments. The first step in protecting your cats is to ensure they're up to date on their vaccinations, as this is the best defense against the virus. If they're not already, scheduling a vaccination update with your vet would be wise.

At home, thoroughly clean and disinfect anything the foster kittens may have come into contact with — this includes their bedding, toys, and litter boxes. Use a bleach solution, as it's effective against this virus. Letting your cats roam in different areas of the home than where the kittens were housed can also reduce risk.

Keep an eye on your cats for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or sudden loss of appetite. If you notice any of these signs, it's important to contact your vet immediately.

To address your concerns more specifically and develop a tailored plan, I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet.
