Alaskan Malamute is now paralyzed, eye tremors, and zero diagnosis...?

I don’t know what's going on with Luna, and I’m honestly kind of freaking out. She’s my sweet Alaskan Malamute, and up until last night, she was totally fine. We were out for our usual evening walk when she suddenly just stopped moving. I thought maybe she stepped on something, but now she can’t use her back legs at all, and her eyes won’t stop twitching. It’s been like this overnight, and I’ve taken her to the vet, but they didn’t find anything conclusive. They ran some tests, but I’m still waiting for results, and I hate seeing her like this, so helpless. Anyone ever dealt with something similar? Any advice on what to do while we wait?

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried about your Alaskan Malamute's sudden paralysis and eye tremors. That certainly sounds distressing. These symptoms could be due to several potential causes, including a neurological issue like a spinal injury, a stroke, or even a condition called myasthenia gravis, which affects the communication between nerves and muscles. In some cases, an infectious disease or a toxin could also be responsible.

At home, ensure your dog remains comfortable and try to prevent any further injury by limiting their movement. Soft bedding can help ease any pressure on joints. It's essential, however, to monitor for signs of a more serious problem, like difficulty breathing, changes in appetite, or any new symptoms.

Given these symptoms, it’s crucial not to delay further. Watch for signs like worsening tremors, fever, or any changes in behavior, which could indicate an emergency.

I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can help evaluate your dog's condition more thoroughly and guide you on the next steps. Take care, and I hope your Malamute feels better soon!
