Afraid husband may be over walking dog.

I don’t know what’s going on, and I’m starting to get worried. My husband has decided that our dog, Max, needs to aim for some kind of canine marathon, and he’s been taking him for these really long walks every morning and evening for the past week. I mean, they’re gone for over an hour each time, and now Max is just sleeping all day, barely lifting his head when I call him for food or playtime. He used to be so lively, but now he seems kinda drained, and I’m concerned that it might be too much for him. Has anyone else experienced this with their dog? I just want to make sure we’re not overdoing it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Answer

You're doing the right thing by asking about your dog's exercise routine. Over-walking can indeed impact your dog's health, so let's break this down.

How much exercise your dog needs can depend on several factors, including their age, breed, and overall health. Some breeds, like Border Collies or Labrador Retrievers, are built for more vigorous activity, while others may be content with a couple of short strolls a day. Puppies and older dogs especially need careful consideration since growing bones or less agile joints can be sensitive to over-exertion.

Watch for signs of over-exercise such as limping, reluctance to move, excessive panting, or a decrease in enthusiasm for walks, which could all indicate that the walks might be too much. Additionally, if your dog is struggling to recover after walks—like taking longer than usual to calm down or drink water—that's another red flag.

At home, ensure your dog has time to rest in a comfortable, quiet spot after exercise. Also, consider balancing physical activity with mental stimulation through puzzle toys or obedience training to keep them engaged without overdoing it physically.

If you notice any concerning symptoms or if your dog's energy and interest in walks change drastically, it might be a good idea to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can help tailor an exercise routine that best suits your dog's needs!
