Addison's disease dog new incontinence

I really need some advice and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now. My sweet golden retriever, Max, was diagnosed with Addison's disease a few months back, and we've been managing it with meds pretty well until now. But lately, he's been having accidents in the house almost daily, which was never an issue before this, and it breaks my heart to see him so embarrassed. I've read that incontinence can sometimes be linked to Addison's, but I’m not sure how common this is or what to do about it. I'm also worried about the impact of changing meds on his adrenal issues. Has anyone else been through something like this with their fur baby? What worked for you? I just want him to feel comfortable and happy again. Any advice or personal experiences would mean the world to me right now. Thanks in advance!

Answer

Hi there! I’m really sorry to hear about your pup’s new issue with incontinence. Let's dive into what might be going on and how you can help at home.

Addison's disease affects the adrenal glands, which play a big role in regulating hormones critical for balancing water and electrolytes. This imbalance can sometimes lead to urinary incontinence. Additionally, if there's been a recent change in your dog’s medication or dosage, this too might be a factor. Stress or a urinary tract infection (UTI) might also cause or worsen the issue.

At home, keep your dog comfortable by ensuring they have frequent opportunities to go outside. You might also consider using puppy pads indoors temporarily to manage any accidents. Keeping a consistent feeding and medication schedule can also help maintain balance.

Watch out for signs that could indicate a more serious issue, such as excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, or sudden weakness. If you notice any of these, it’s important to seek veterinary attention promptly.

To ensure we’re managing this condition effectively, I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can work with you to further investigate the cause and advise on the best next steps for your dog's health.
