Accidentally gave my dog expired flea/tick medicine. Shall I give him another (unexpired) dose?

I'm in a bit of a panic here and could really use some advice. Last night, I realized that I accidentally gave my pup, Max, some flea and tick medicine that expired a couple of months ago. I'm kicking myself for not checking the date sooner, but now I'm just worried about what to do next. He seems fine, just his usual playful self, but I'm concerned the expired meds might not be effective and he's prone to getting ticks when we go hiking. Should I go ahead and give him another dose with the new pack I just bought, or is that too much medication for his system in such a short period? I really don’t want to mess this up further. Any vets or experienced dog owners here who've been through something similar? Thanks a ton in advance for your help!

Answer

Hello there! I totally understand your concern about giving your dog expired flea and tick medication. It's great that you're reaching out for clarity.

First, while expired medications might not be toxic, their effectiveness can decrease over time. This means the expired dose you gave might not adequately protect your dog from fleas and ticks. It’s generally advised not to give an additional dose right away, as this could lead to overdosing.

Here’s what I recommend:

- Monitor your dog for any unusual symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in behavior. If any of these occur, it would be best to consult a vet.

- Keep an eye on your dog for signs of flea or tick activity, like excessive scratching or biting at the skin.

As an extra precaution, ensure that your dog avoids areas with high flea and tick presence until you can administer a fresh dose.

If your dog does show any concerning signs or you have questions about when to safely give the next dose, I’d suggest booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We’re here to help you ensure your furry friend stays safe and sound!
