AC is out, house is 92 degrees F. Worried about my 3 cats.

I’m freaking out right now and could really use some advice. Our AC just totally crapped out on us, and the temperature inside the house is climbing—it's already a scorching 92 degrees. My three cats, Bella, Loki, and Jasper, are clearly uncomfortable. They’re all panting a bit, which I know isn’t usual for cats, especially inside. I’ve given them cold water, but they seem disinterested, and I’m trying to keep them from getting too stressed. I’m absolutely terrified about the heat affecting them, and I have no idea when the AC will be fixed. Does anyone have tips on how to keep them cool in this heat? I’d really appreciate any suggestions to help my fur babies stay safe until we sort this out.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. Cats are sensitive to heat, so it's great that you're keeping an eye on them during this hot spell.

At 92 degrees F, your house is quite warm for your cats. In the short term, try placing fans around the house to circulate air and keep windows open for a breeze if possible, always ensuring your cats can’t escape. Consider providing damp towels or a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel for them to lie next to. Keep the curtains or blinds closed to block direct sunlight.

Ensure they have plenty of fresh, cool water available at all times, as staying hydrated is crucial. You might even put a few ice cubes in their water bowl as an extra cooling treat.

Watch for signs of heat stress, which can escalate quickly and include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or staggering. If you notice these symptoms, it's important to act quickly by moving your cats to a cooler place, such as a bathroom with a cold tile floor, and contact a vet immediately.
